Story Of The Year

Musicscan: What has Story Of The Year currently been up to? How did you spend the last few days and weeks?

Story Of The Year: We just released our record worldwide and have been touring since just before it came out. We did some U.S stuff and just finished a month over international touring including Australia, japan, the Uk and Germany.

Musicscan: Your debut album Page Avenue was a highly successful one. Did you feel any kind pressure to top it?

Story Of The Year: Of course when we set down to write the sophomore record we felt a little bit of extra responsibility but after a little time off working on the songs we felt it was necessary to ignore those kinds of thoughts in order to write the song we wanted to write.

Musicscan: In The Wake Of Determination was considered to be a very anticipated release. What are your thoughts on this? How did all this attention make you feel?

Story Of The Year: Well sweet. We were hoping people would be as excited to hear the record as we were to make it and if that’s the case then we couldn’t be happier.

Musicscan: Did you always had people who supported you? Right from the beginning? I guess there have been some kind of buzz around Story Of The Year right from the start…

Story Of The Year: Well we wanted to make sure that if we ever were successful then it would be on our terms and those terms were based around the fact that we wanted to establish a touring fan base first before we got radio or video fans or anything. So we started touring 8 months before our first record even came out and didn’t really stop touring until it was time for the second record to be recorded.

Musicscan: Can you give an advice to upcoming bands, how to gain attention?

Story Of The Year: Its all about having great music but above all working harder than everyone else. That does not mean stepping over anyone else. Because you have to have support throughout this business in every level of the game. Just work ridiculously hard and be the best band an people you can be.

Musicscan: You were always tagges with having a so called screamo sound. Do you feel attached to this label?

Story Of The Year: Not always. Not til the term got some momentum behind it, then we got lumped in there. Personally I don’t think it’s the right classification but to each his own. Whatever you think we are then great. I think we are simply a rock band.

Musicscan: There are lots of bands out there mixing different aggressive styles with technical skills, emotional parts and hardcore breakdowns. What makes Story Of The Year stand out? Is there something you would point out as your trademarks?

Story Of The Year: Well we have always tried to make a priority of our live show which isn’t always the case with some bands. I think we are genuine dudes that know why were are here and with most bands getting huge today I think that is a major difference. And we are gangstas and not many bands can claim a legit crew nowadays

Musicscan: Your releases always cover a lot of bases - there's something for everyone within the heavy underground i would say. Were you going for a more inclusive approach right from the beginning or is it a result of your progression?

Story Of The Year: Hopefully we will always continue to grow and do new things. We wanted a solid rock record that included pieces of all of our influences in it and I think we accomplished that.

Musicscan: Many of todays heavy bands seem to miss originality and passion. Your band has tons of both and i'm impressed every time i listen to your songs. Is it just a question of the right attitude towards music? What do you miss within todays music scene?

Story Of The Year: I think so. The approach is very genuine and not molded to fit anything but our personal goals and desires when it comes to it.

Musicscan: Is it a challenge to continually record new Story Of The Year songs and is it an intentionell drive to make the songs as varied musically as possible?

Story Of The Year: There is no specific goal really other than to make the best rock songs we can that we are happy with and feel that we will be happy with when we are 40.

Musicscan: Have there been certain issues you specifically wanted to address with In The Wake Of Determination? What was your main focus creating this new songs onto?

Story Of The Year: We wanted to do things during the recording process that we were not able to do the first time around. We wanted a more guitar driven record and a lot less production and perfection. We wanted to sound as real as it is not as perfect as it could be.

Musicscan: What did you guys do differently on your second record that you hadn't done previously to keep things progressing?

Story Of The Year: The preproduction process was very different this time around and helped things develop much more closely to the way we always wanted them to.

Musicscan: What have been your expectations for this furst Taste Of Chaos tour? You still seem to be underrated overhere…

Story Of The Year: We had no idea what to think really because we had never been to many of the places on that tour. But each and every place we went blew us away. That was one of the greatest tours we have ever been on. And I hope things are just as good when we return.
