Musicscan: Start off by giving us a brief history of Tephra?

Tephra: Long time before Tephra was founded most of the members knew each other already. We all played in different bands and projects together until the day we found out that we all get along on the same musical level. So we grew together as a band which happened at the end of 2003. By and by Dennis joined us and extends our live performance with visual effects that makes the whole thing even more interesting. For a short time Florian is also part of the band. He enriches our music with electronical sounds which you can hear on our next release.

Musicscan: What was the original goal (or reason) for the formation of Tephra?

Tephra: There was no direct reason. As mentioned earlier it just happened that six friends found each other.

Musicscan: I never would have guessed that you were a band from Germany. This surely is a compliment you often get to hear!?

Tephra: Thanks for the compliment. We were told already a few times from bands and people that saw us which caresses us, but we don’t take that as a “compliment” personally because there is a lot of good german and european bands out there. In the last time one can recognize that the music scene in Europe sticks together and people not just adore bands from the US but rather support their “own” bands.

Musicscan: Were there any particular adjustments or things that you wanted to improve upon from a technical aspect or writing compared to the bands you have been involved into in the past?

Tephra: No, it is just different and more heartfelt than before.

Musicscan: Do you feel that your selftitled record is still a good representation of bands sounding as of right now? I guess that you progressed a lot after recording those songs a while ago as the band isn't that old yet.

Tephra: Of course we developed. Although we stand by the record as it represents who we were at that time und what we did. It had a huge impact on our growth as a band.

Musicscan: Has Tephra already found its "own" sound, or is it still evolving? Your debut features songs that vary from real Heavy Metal to Post-Hardcore and Indie-tunes.

Tephra: The songs will be multilayer as our musical input differs and we dont convulsive determine our sound. But we think the thread is and will be apparent.

Musicscan: Your songs cover a lot of bases - there's something for everyone within the heavy underground. Are you heading for a more inclusive approach or is this happening by accident?

Tephra: Yes, that is true. Primarily we dont do what the people would like to hear, but what we like and with what we can express our feelings and emotions. However it is nice to hear that our music appeals to so many different people and not just a certain category because we are not the same, too, and we guess one can see that in our sound.

Musicscan: Is it an intentionell drive to make the songs as varied musically as possible?

Tephra: Yes, it could be. We estimate the freedom in music and don’t want to limit ourselves in any manner.

Musicscan: When you are writing new songs do you have certain issues you specifically want to address or does this depend on who brings in the ideas?

Tephra: Of course we have basic structures of the songs but we all together work on the ideas. A main songwriter within the band does not exist.

Musicscan: There are lots of instrumental parts on the record, the music itself has room to grow and there is some kind of special mood around the tracks. Has it been your aim to create a dark feeling?

Tephra: It happens…everyone knows those days where you feel like shit.

Musicscan: Is your songwriting affected by music your hear, or do you try not to be influenced by that?

Tephra: Yeah of course we listen to bands of this genre, but we don’t want to copy them. Having influences is part of every band which one cant deny. But we get our inspiration not just from music, but also from films, art and books…

Musicscan: What are Tephra's plans for the next full length? Is there already a good amount of material written?

Tephra: We already have some new songs written and work on more new, exciting and interesting ideas. But we don’t want to blab too much. The new record will be amazing and hopefully the people will like it still.

Musicscan: What direction is your music taking?

Tephra: Good question, next question...haha.

Musicscan: When you strip the band down Tephra to its core, what is it all about?

Tephra: Friends that found together as a band and all want to express their feelings. That’s it!

Musicscan: Where do you envision Tephra in 2, 5 and in 10 years from now?

Tephra: Top of the pos! Just kidding. Touring a lot and meet a lot of nice people. It is hard to look into the future as we don’t know what is going to happen tomorrow.

Musicscan: Any last words?

Tephra: Big thank you for the interview, our families, Riptide Recordings and to all the people who put their trust in us…
