All Shall Perish

Interview von: arne mit Beniko, am: 15.01.2004 ]

Aus Oakland, Kalifornien stammen ALL SHALL PERISH, die mit ihrem Debüt "Hate.Malice.Revenge" ein arg brutales und nicht minder aggressives Brett über Nuclear Blast vorlegen. Der monströse Brachial-Sound des Quintetts bewegt sich dabei zwischen alles vernichtendem Death Metal und deutlichen Hardcore- Anleihen aus dem Tough Guy-Sektor, die ihre Entsprechung zumeist in deftigen Breakdown-Parts finden. Fans zwischen Dying Fetus, Six Feet Under, Hatebreed, All Out War usw. sollten ALL SHALL PERISH unbedingt antesten...

Musicscan: what's your self-understanding of all shall perish? what does your band stands for? what are goals you are reaching for?

All Shall Perish: All Shall Perish has been put on this earth to tear open the assholes of all genres on Metal, mix them up in a bowl and throw it into the faces of all who get in the way of our amplifiers. All Shall Perish exists for one purpose and one purpose only, and that is to take our listeners on an emotional vouage through the realms of Hate, Malice and Revenge. Our ultimate goal as a band is to get out to Europe and see just how fucking crazy the metal scene really is.. We are all really stoked on that.

Musicscan: tell me something about band members background, please. what have been bands you played in in the past?

All Shall Perish: I (Beniko) played in a grind band named ANTAGONY (www.antagony.com) for about 5 years before joining the band END OF ALL, which ultimatly became ALL SHALL PERISH. Our other guitarist Caysen was in a melodic death metal band out of Oakland named HACKSAW TO THE THROAT (www.hacksawtothethroat.com). Our republican bassist Mike used to be in the band BOOF that was legendary amongst many Hairy Transgender Folk.

Musicscan: what's your motivation to play especially this heavy and brutal kind of music? do you feel like playing extreme music?

All Shall Perish: I think the biggest motivation for writing in this heavy style is the end product. Often times we don't know were a song is going to end up when we start, but by the end, we have a composition that really emmits the feelings and emotions we are going through at the time of writing. For me, thats the coolest part of being in this band, and what makes me want to continue writing and recording with these fuckers.

Musicscan: it looks like you are very experienced with tough situations. like "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger." am I right? do you take life as an everyday struggle?

All Shall Perish: We each have been through our own personal hells, some of us are still going through them, but thats life... you have to go through a vast set of trials in order to see the light at the end of the tunnel and discover who you really are, and what your mission is.

Musicscan: Lets speak about your musical progression. what has changed since you started all shall perish?

All Shall Perish: ALL SHALL PERISH originally started as a brutal death metal band named END OF ALL. They were highly influenced by such bands as DEVOURMENT and MORTICIAN. When Mike and I joined the band and we became ALL SHALL PERISH, we started in incorporate some brutal breakdowns as well as plently of guitar harmonies. When Caysen joined the band to form what is our current line-up, we started pumping out songs that fucking blew me away.

Musicscan: is it an intentionell drive to make the songs as brutal musically as possible?

All Shall Perish: We have a process know as the SHIT FILTER. If one of use isn't feeling something, its changed and molding into something that everyone can agree on. Since we are all picky bastards, the songs that do make it through our evil assembly line turn out to be fucking intense.

Musicscan: you're using a lot of elements of different styles. is it planned to be more varied or/and natural happened?

All Shall Perish: We all grew up listening to lots of different stuff.. So I guess its just natural. We don't go out of our way to try and fit in as many styles as we can, its just how we hear things.

Musicscan: have there been certain issues you specifically wanted to address with your record coming out on NB?

All Shall Perish: Nuclear Blast is the most down to earth label in Extreme Metal Music. The guys/gals at NB have treated us great so far, and everyone is very excited for the European release of our album Hate.Malice.Revenge in Febuary.

Musicscan: what was your main focus creating this new songs onto? have there been any difficulies while you were working on the songs?

All Shall Perish: Like I said before we have a really tight shit filter, so it can be frustrating at times when there is a disagreement on riffs, but thats part of being in a band. If everyone agreed on everything right off the bat without putting their own twist on things, the songs wouldn't come out as good. So yeah, writing new stuff can be difficult, but its always worth it in the end.

Musicscan: what do you consider to be the trademarks of all shall perish?

All Shall Perish: ALL SHALL PERISH's trademark would be our crushing breakdowns. I've had fans that came up to me and told me they felt like they got run over by a fucking truck after we played our set, that was one of the coolest things I had ever heard!

Musicscan: your songs cover a lot of bases - there's something for everyone within the heavy underground i would say. were you going for a more inclusive approach right from the beginning or is it a result of your progression?

All Shall Perish: Metal Genres have always come in waves. Right now Metalcore is really trendy. The big problem with Metalcore is that it is growing stagnant just like death metal did in the mid 90's and black metal respectivly. There are cool elements to all of these genres, but when you have a million clones playing the same shit over and over, it just doesn't give you that special feeling anymore... It becomes almost painful to listen too. Our goal when we are writing it to keep the listener on their toes, and to give them enough groove, brutality and melody to send them home at the end of the night on crutches and a huge smile on their face.

Musicscan: who influenced you when you were coming up? ...and are there any bands right now that you are interested in?

All Shall Perish: I grew up listening to a lot of extreme metal, I remember getting the relapse records catalog back when their were still a joint venture with Nuclear Blast Records, and ordering almost everything in there. Bands that inspire me to this day, OPETH, PANTERA, SLAYER, CANNIBAL CORPSE (old), and millions of others. Right now i've been checking out a lot of new bands, BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, HEAVEN SHALL BURN and THROWDOWN.

Musicscan: do you feel that the new record is a pretty good representation of bands sounding as of right now?

All Shall Perish: We are playing much faster now then when we recorded the album, so when you see us live, be prepared for some machine gun blastbeats!

Musicscan: could you imagine another way to get rid of your frustration and aggression besides playing such intense and aggressive music?

All Shall Perish: Jerking Off.

Musicscan: are the lyrics equally important to the music? do all members identify with them?

All Shall Perish: Lyrics are extremly important to the songs. Most of us are in agreement with the statements we make in our lyrics. Some more extreme that others, but the over all message we dish out we defiently all agree on. This world is a fucked up place.. Never let your gaurd down, and always fight for what you feel is right.

Musicscan: are there any messages that you guys are trying to get out into the scenes?

All Shall Perish: Yes. Without laughter there is no S-laughter.

Musicscan: since music videos are the thing right now, what will a video with all shall perish look like?

All Shall Perish: On our first release there will be a bonus music video included on the CD. Intense Live shots, Insane Mosh Pits.. I believe Severed Savior said it best... Brutality is LAW. ;)

Musicscan: why should someone pick up your cd? is there something that is truly different?

All Shall Perish: ALL SHALL PERISH is going to be a breathe of fresh air to many people in the scenes. So many bands follow a standard formula when they write... we try our best to make every song its own story without some bullshit formula to base it on. We tend to keep your ears pleased at all times.

Musicscan: what is the essence of all shall perish? what does it all come down to?

All Shall Perish: It all comes down to 5 extremly different people, who have found and share a very special connection and friendship. We are all brothers, and as long as we all stick together, we plan to just keep moving forward in the direction we are headed.

Musicscan: something you would like to mention at the end? just do it...

All Shall Perish: Check out http://www.allshallperish.com to keep up to date with what the band is up to, and hopefully we will be finding our way out to Europe sometime this year to meet all of our fans... HAIL METAL!
