Cipher System

Musicscan: give our readers a short briefing about Cipher System, please. what are you guys doing right at the moment?

Cipher System: We are right now working on some new material, making as many interviews as possible and reharsal for some upcoming gigs.

Musicscan: can you tell me how and when Cipher System started, please. what was your motivation to build up this band?

Cipher System: Well, I like to say that Cipher System started out in the ashes of Eternal Grief in 2001. We (Pontus, Johan and me) started Eternal Grief back in -95/96. But Cipher System started out in 2001 when Andreas left the band and we got Peter on keyboard to replace him. From the begining we sounded a bit more agressive and raw, but as Johan started making the music we moved on to a more progressive sound. It has always been a dream for me to release an album, so I have worked for this since the begining and it feels great to finally have made that dream come true.

Musicscan: what was your reason to choose espacially this heavy kind of music? i mean it's very hard to please technical...

Cipher System: I don't think that we choose this kind of music, it just came naturaly to us since the begining. I don't see it that way, hard pleasing any listeners? We play what we can and you can only hope that people other than ourselvs will like it too.

Musicscan: what have been the past of bands members in the metal-scene? have you been in different bands before? you seem to be very young in age, but what is your background? how did you come together to form Cipher System?

Cipher System: I just joined Nightrage, but we don't really have a past in the metal scen. Johan played with Nightshade for a short while. But since we live about one hour from Gothenburg in a small town we don't really have that close contact to other bands, so the focus has only been on Cipher System until now. Our youngest member is 19, and I am 24 so we maybe are young but we have played together for some years now. Cipher (or Eternal Grief) started out on one drunk evening in 1995, and that was the start. So if you want to form a band? get drunk, ha ha.

Musicscan: what sets Cipher System apart from the rest? what is different about your band? there are lots of metal bands outside playing a similar style. what are the strengths of Cipher System?

Cipher System: I don't think we differentiates that much from other bands as a band, but our songs do. We mix speed with groove, agression with calmness. On our new songs we have worked more with creating emotions and make the lyrics and the music connect on an other level. The music should reflect the lyrics and make them come alive. What do you think differentiates?

Musicscan: you surely remember your first rehearsels. how did your sound developed since you started?

Cipher System: Yes, ha ha. It was Pontus (now drums) on vocals, me (bass) and johan (guitar) and an other guy called Daniel on drums. The sound back then was more like Cannibal Corpse meets Morbid Angel with melodies. We still have som real old riffs that maybe will be used in the future.

Musicscan: who influenced you when you were coming up? ...and are there any bands right now that you are interested in?

Cipher System: I must say, Dissection, Morbid, Cannibal, Edge of Sanity to name a few. Nowadays we don't get that inspiration listening to music. Johan just sits at home jamming, but of course he get influenced by the bands he listen to mostly at the moment, that is just how it is. Right now I have listened alot to Sevendust and Johan listen alot to Devin Townsend for the moment. But if they influence us in our work with Cipher? I don't know, maybe on an subconcious level.

Musicscan: did you always had people who supported you? right from the biginning? i can imagine that it's pretty hard for a younger band to get recognition, because everyone's focussing only on the big ones...

Cipher System: No off course not in the begining of Eternal Grief. But since the first demo with Cipher System we have had great support and I think that the "Eyecon" demo took us to a new level here in Sweden at least.

Musicscan: do you think those modern and successful metal bands such as childrean of bodom, in flames, dark tranquillity... opened a lot of doors for younger bands coming up like yours. i think it's easier to find a record label today and stuff like that. how did you find yours?

Cipher System: Hell yeah. They have helped alot of bands as ourselves. But it is still hard for bands to find good labels to sign with. I think that I can count the better half on my two hands. But, if you just want to release an album and don't have any future plans for the band you can sign a shitty deal and get your album out there. But that just infects the whole business with bad records, and that makes it more hard to find the ones that are great. It was actually Lifeforce that e-mailed us after reading a review of "Eyecon".

Musicscan: you're using a lot of elements of different styles. is it planned to be more varied or/and natural happened? how do you go about writing a record? what is your main focus creating new songs onto?

Cipher System: As I said before, this music style just come natural to us. Maybe the next album will sound different it will still sound Cipher System. When we have a new riff, Johan almost everytime starts out with the melody and we create the whole arangement around that. The main focus is to make music people won't get tired of.

Musicscan: if you would summarise the message and atmosphere of Cipher System's music in one sentence. what would it be?

Cipher System: Melodic death metal wareing in a progressive suit with a phsycological snare around your neck.

Musicscan: are the lyrics equally important to the music? do all band members identify? by the way: what are the topics you deal with? unforunately i onyl received a promotional copy without everything...

Cipher System: For me the lyrics are very important as I write them. They are dealing with things that I feel, experience or find interesting. I guide the readers/listeners into the darker phsycological side of mankind, try to make them feel and realise how sick and bizare our world could be.

Musicscan: are there any messages that you guys are trying to get out into the scenes?

Cipher System: No, we are no political nor an anti-anything band. So we are just trying to spread our love for music.

Musicscan: Can you take one typical Cipher System song and explain what you hope people are getting out of it.

Cipher System: In Perfection is a perfect track that shows the width of Cipher System. Start out with some electronics elements, we change tempo alot from slow and atmospheric peices to fast and heavy parts.

Musicscan: what is the song you guys feel especially proud of (whether compositionally, lyrically,...)?

Cipher System: I think that I speek for all of us when I say "Central Tunnel 8". That song was one of the songs that I thought we had to cut away from the album. But that song really became great when we recorded it and I am pleased with the lyrics on that song, so I think I will go with that one.

Musicscan: what's your self-understanding of Cipher System? what does your band stands for? what are goals you are reaching for?

Cipher System: You should think melodic metal when you hear the name Cipher System. Off course it would be great to sell alot of records so we can work full-time on the music. But for that we have to release many albums first, so we take that problem first. Release some albums, shoot a video and go on tour. We take the small goals first, and expand after that.

Musicscan: where do you see Cipher System in the grand scheme of metal music? you don't fit nicely into one genre i guess...

Cipher System: No, I don't see us just as another melodic death metal band. I don't even like to call us death metal to be honest. I usualy call us melodic metal. Our music is about more than death, still it is present in some places. I think that "genre" is used by writers to make it easy for the readers understand what the bands sounds like. After all it comes down to this, good and bad music.

Musicscan: you surely read press reviews for your release. what are comments you can not feel familiar with? maybe some comparisms or something like this...

Cipher System: Yes, I really don't see the link bethween us and Dark Tranquillity. Sure, we use keyboard and we recorded in Studio Fredmam, but I don't see the link bethween our music at all. But if that is what people think, they think that way. I don't dislike it, I just disagree, ha ha.

Musicscan: what kind of people are into your band? have you ever thought about it? where do you see your potential listeners?

Cipher System: No, I have never thought about our listeners as a listener group. You don't have to think or concentrate to hard on the music to enjoy it.

Musicscan: what kind of mix you see as your crowd while playing live? is there any chance to see you supporting your new record here in germany?

Cipher System: I think that thanks to our label we will have many hard-core fans in the crowd, but also metal heads that are into melodic death metal. About tour, we don't have any tour lined up right now. but check our homepage for latest updates. www.cipher-system.com

Musicscan: your biggest wish to happen for the bands future?

Cipher System: Right now we wish for a tour and that "Central Tunnel 8" get the publicity that it deserve. Then we will conquer the world! Haha!
