Musicscan: give our readers a short briefing about Susperia, please. what are you guys
doing right at the moment? Susperia: Well right now we are on a short Norwegian tour .. about 9 gigs and just
trying to get to as many festivals as possible .We are being kept quiet busy
doing a lot of interviews with the press, radio and TV.
Musicscan: can you tell me how and when Susperia started, please. what was your
motivation to build up this band? Susperia: It all started back in 98, when Mr Cyrus and Tjodalv got together to jam.
They decided that the music needed to be recorded so they started to look
for
other members to perform with. At the time Tjodalv was going to the Wacken
festival as Hellhammers drum tech. He met Athera there and gave him a cd of
the
music. Athera liked it and gave me a call asking if I wanted to join in and
the rest is history. The motivation was to get the songs that we heard
recorded and it has grown from there. Musicscan: what was your reason to choose espacially this heavy and modern sounding
kind of music? i mean it's very hard to please
technical.. Susperia: We just wanted to make music that we liked to listen to and when it comes to
the technical parts well this is just the way it turns out/ We only play
what we like and hopefully others like it. We don't try to play any
particular
type of genres, the fact that it sounds modern is just the way things turn
out
- I suppose you could say it's the chemistry between us!! Musicscan: what sets Susperia apart from the rest? what is different about your band?
there are lots of metal bands outside playing a similar style. what are the
strengths of Susperia you see? Susperia: We are Susperia we don't really give a damn what others play, if you like
our music that is wery good!!! If you don't then I'm not going to change the
music to please people. This is one of our strengths and what we feel
separates
Susperia from others. If you buy the cd you will know !! Musicscan: who influenced you when you were coming up? ...and are there any bands right
now that you are interested in? Susperia: Back then when we started, it was a lot of different. We listened to a lot
of bands - too many to mention, but if you listen to our music you will
hear
all the different genres from the 80's and 90's Musicscan: did you always had people who supported you? right from the biginning? i can
imagine that it's pretty hard for a new band in
scandinavia to get recognition, because here in mid-europe most of the
people are only focussing on the big ones. Susperia: Yes we had some difficulties. It was really hard to get people to understand
that Susperia wasn't just another project from Tjodalv. A lot of magazines
said that Susperia would just die after a short time because it was just
another black metal band member who was making music for himself. We had to
go
through a lot of bullshit to convince people that we were a serious full
time
band ... but the underground supported us and finally we were accepted as a
band and not a project. Musicscan: you're using a lot of elements of different styles. is it planned to be more
varied or/and natural happened? how do you go about writing a record? what
is your main focus creating new songs onto? Susperia: When we were writing for 'Unlimited' we went up to my cabin which is deep in
the woods of Norway. Very quiet and no distractions. We just started to make
music. The inspiration I guess was that we needed to get a lot of our
frustration out, this was because of our situation at the time - we were in
between
record labels. We worked for about 3 weeks and got a lot of songs ready. The
lyrics were written during a mad period just before we went in the studio to
record the album.. Basically this is what we do when we make a new album. We
just leave the world behind and enter the dark womb of the Norwegian woods
...... Musicscan: if you would summarise the message and atmosphere of Susperia's music in one
sentence. what would it be? Susperia: Melodic extreme metal Musicscan: are the lyrics equally important to the music? do all band members identify?
by the way: what are the topics you deal with?
unforunately i only received a promotional copy without everything... Susperia: Athera writes about all kinds of shit but the topics are basically about
daily problems and the weird situations which happened during the making of
the
new songs. Musicscan: are there any messages that you guys are trying to get out into the scenes? Susperia: If we have a message then it is just have the right attitude and you will
manage everything. Don't be afraid to do different things and be different
from
others. That is what we want the audience to know . Musicscan: can you take one typical Susperia song and explain what you hope people are
getting out of it. Susperia: Devil May Care .. if you think you can do drugs and commit crime and get
away with it with out any conscience your wrong my friend. If you think you
can run away from your own problems your still wrong .. just face the
reality
and get right on to it, don't be afraid with what you are struggling with Musicscan: what is the song you guys feel especially proud of (wheather
compositionally, lyrically,...)? Susperia: To be honest all the songs make us very proud. I can't pick any one in
particular because I think we have a really strong album with 'Unlimited'.
We
overcame our frustrations and feel proud with the album we made. Musicscan: what's your self-understanding of Susperia? what does your band stands for?
what are goals you are reaching for? Susperia: We don't give in to anyone, we are very strong minded in reaching our
goals,we will never stop.We want to be successful in what we do !!!! Musicscan: where do you see Susperia in the grand scheme of metal music? you don't fit
nicely into one genre i think... Susperia: We play extreme metal ,we play the type of metal that's got attitude and
balls!! We're not looking to fit nicely into any genres. Just being involved
in
the grand scheme of metal music is enough at the moment. It would be nice to
become recognised as one of the best metal bands in the world. But that is
for the people out there to decide. Musicscan: what kind of people are into your band? have you ever thought about it?
where do you see your potential listeners na what are the people coming to
your shows like? Susperia: There are all kinds of people that like Susperia, but mostly kids who like
the new breed of metal we play. It is no longer just long haired metal fans,
it seems like every one likes metal now a days !! Musicscan: your biggest wish to happen for the band? Susperia: To get a major breakthrough would be nice heheheheh And as I mentioned
before to be recognised as one of the best metal bands in the world. |
