While She Sleeps

Musicscan: Being in the process of writing/recording You Are We - how difficult is it to create your third album? Everyone is always speaking about the so-called difficult third album of a band...

While She Sleeps: Every album is a difficult process because you aim to set the bar higher than the last record. Plus I think by album 3 people are almost waiting for you to put out a bad record so there is definitely a lot of pressure for sure.

Musicscan: Has it been harder to come up with new ideas and songs, now that you are around for roughly ten years already? Or was it easier due to experience and knowledge of the While She Sleeps trademarks?

While She Sleeps: While She Sleeps do have specific methods and formulas that we have crafted over the years but we are always drawing inspiration from different experiences and music that we listen to at the time. Every time in the studio is different from the last, with different difficulties that arise, so we can only prepare our selves so much.

Musicscan: When you started the work for You Are We - did you know you would create something completely different than you did your previous work, or was it your decision to just let creativity flow?

While She Sleeps: It's always the case of letting the creativity flow. We never really set out for a record to sound a particular way when we sit down to start writing it. The energy and vibe of any record is part conscious, part subconscious flow of creativity that is manifesting from inspiration all around us at that stage of our lives. It's always a very interesting and exciting process to watch what an album will grow in to.

Musicscan: People who got introduced to your band often are impressed by your "different" and open-minded approach to music from what i read when doing some online research. What do you think about statements like these, and what is your approach towards music and being While She Sleeps?

While She Sleeps: While She Sleeps has definitely never been more than just 5 good friends pushing the boundaries of something they loved doing together ever since we were kids. We have grown as the band has and feel like our open topic of the state of the world is something that resonates with people a lot.

Musicscan: What exactly does While She Sleeps sound like from your point of view? Is it any kind of departure to what people might expect from you if you think of reviews and fan reaction. Do you feel "understood" to say so?

While She Sleeps: I think Sleeps and our fans have a very common understanding. We feel like the message and outlook the band has is reciprocated well with how people perceive the band.

Musicscan: What sort of evolution has the band gone through into You Are We? I would expect you to have reached an even more coherent and in "one-style" sounding on the one and a damn good dramaturgy and diverse aggression on the other hand...

While She Sleeps: I think an artists sound is never really defined. It's constantly progressing just as we do as people. We definitely have reached a level of maturity with this album I think.

Musicscan: As While She Sleeps always seems to thrive on contrast: does the new album take things a step further in either the direction of heaviness or emotionality/catchiness?

While She Sleeps: Yeah definitely! All those things have been pushed up a notch. We never want robe a band that sits in a comfort zone. You'll have to get hold of the album and hear for yourself.

Musicscan: As far as lyrical themes go, could you give us a little insight into it, please. Is there an underlying idea behind the album that can stand for You Are We as a whole?

While She Sleeps: The feeling of not being alone in a crowded world as it's often so easy to feel that way , the unity often lost in life from border to boundary and from race to race.

Musicscan: If you would have to say what the philosophy behind While She Sleeps is all about - how would that description look like?

While She Sleeps: While She Sleeps stand for equality. We have a voice and people listen to what we have to say. So we want what we have to say be something worth while. We want global change because, let's be honest, the world is being destroyed because of human nature. And even if we can change the outlook of just one person then we have done our job.

Musicscan: Lastly: what do you want people to take away from your third album?

While She Sleeps: We want people to see that every action they take has a ripple effect of the rest of the world. We are unified by a common goal of the well being of earth and humanity.Be caring, be kind. Because at the end of the day, you are we.
