Musicscan: Why is music your privileged form of expression as opposed to other artistic avenues? What makes music special in this regard?
Sonic Syndicate: Music has always been a big part of my life ever since I was a kid. My dad used to play guitar for me and my mother plays both bass and paino, so it was always around and I guess thats something that made me wanna play as well. Also they brought us kids so concerts when we were very young and I always though "I wish I was up there too". As a young teenager I got an electric guitar and I took lessons in both guitar and vocals, later I also started playing bass which led me to where I am today.
Musicscan: What effect(s) do you hope to generate through your music? And what makes Sonic Syndicate special out of your view?
Sonic Syndicate: I wanna show people that anything is possible if you believe in yourself and what you do. And the most important thing to me, is to have fun doing it. Us in Sonic Syndicate never cared about what people think of our music, and we never states what kind of genre we're in, we play what we love and we work hard to get where we want and that's why I think we're special.
Musicscan: Is there something like a main theme or a main idea that runs through all of your music, something that perhaps connects the individual songs you‘ve created over time?
Sonic Syndicate: The most important thing for us is to play music we love and enjoy. We are the kind of band that doesnt wanna make the same album over and over again, we wanna renew ourselves, make it interesting for both us and our fans. Of course I have a relation and connection to all the songs we made, and they all make me think of something or feel something.
Musicscan: Is it necessary to create a certain distance between you and the music in order to get a better understanding of its inherent quality – what do you think?
Sonic Syndicate: I think its important that the whole band is involved in the song writing process and that everyone of us is involved in everyting we do, our songs is a mixture of six people different influences and ideas and that to me makes it close as well as distanced, since its a teamwork thing, not only yours personal.
Musicscan: Do you sometimes feel the urge to write a gentle pop song without any rock- or metal-elements but then dismiss this idea again, because you think it does not (yet) fit the Sonic Syndicate aesthetic?
Sonic Syndicate: Nothing is really tabu for us, we are very open-minded when it comes to music. All of us listen to everything from pop to black metal and therefore we get inspiration from many genres and that is what in the end creates our sound. We always share our ideas and try everything out before we dismiss it. We're not scared to release anything, if we like it we record it.
Musicscan: Where do you see the line drawn between progressing on what you do well, and completely offering a new direction or sound?
Sonic Syndicate: We are still very much Sonic Syndicate and we have worked hard to achieve a sound that we are very proud of. However we definitely believe in offering something new for our fans with each album. Its important to grow as muscians and as people. This is reflected in the songs. I think with this album we really wanted to try somethings we had never done before and to make a very diverse album.
Musicscan: Do you think there are still genuinely new sounds to be discovered or can modern music basically be said to be a recombination of already existing forms and elements?
Sonic Syndicate: I think thats a very hard question! For me everything is already done and its probably more like you say that a new sound can be created from a combination of old and new sounds and effects. But who knows, there's still alot of bands I haven't heard yet!
Musicscan: Do you think music might be valued differently nowadays because it’s basically free for everyone and one does not necessarily have to engage with any of its context in order to appreciate it? What effect do you think does the accessibility of music have on the music itself?
Sonic Syndicate: I dont really understand what you mean here, to me music is very important and I dont see how you cant engage of its context and meaning. But I guess people listen to music for different reasons and it makes them happy without really having a deep or personal meaning to it. The whole industry itself is a bit different from before I think just because it's so easy nowadays to access new music without leaving your home or paying for an album. To me that is both good and bad. It's bad because it makes it harder to sell albums and the value of a booklet and cd itself has gone down, but the upside of it is that it also easier to spread the word about your band and get people to listen to your music all around the world.
Musicscan: With the direction of Sonic Syndicate heading a certain way and fans growing with you over the years and releases, do you feel the fans can now relate to what you are feeling or at least understand what you are trying to tell them with your music?
Sonic Syndicate: I think every single one of our fans has their own idea of what we wanna say and that they own have a personal relationship to every one of our songs. You dont always need to tell every story behind every song you write, cause sometimes that takes away the picture and relation your fan has to that song and also leaves somewhat still of a mystery behind it.
Musicscan: What do you hope people to take away from Sonic Syndicate?
Sonic Syndicate: That depends. If its a live show I imagine people will be walking away buzzing and energized because we like to make people totally lose themselves when we get on that stage. Maybe they might have a few bruises too. Regarding our music if you put on a Sonic album you can guarantee you will explore a load of different emotions so everyone can relate to our stuff in some shape or form. But overall I think we just intend for people to enjoy themselves if Sonic are in the mix no matter what the scenario.
Musicscan: Final thoughts?
Sonic Syndicate: I hope our fans will love WE RULE THE NIGHT as much as we do and that they will come and hang out with us on tour cause we will be in Germany very soon!
